Drill Well Monument Casing
Polaris’ monitoring well monument casing (also known as a stick-up protector) is a heavy-duty, lockable outer shell designed to protect the integrity of a groundwater monitoring well. It sits over the internal PVC well casing that extends above the ground surface, serving as both a physical shield and a visible landmark for sampling.
Key Features and Specifications
Physical Protection: Shields the internal well pipe from accidental damage (e.g., from mowers or vehicles), environmental exposure, and unauthorized tampering.
Security: Most monuments feature a hinged, lockable lid (often secured with a padlock) to prevent contamination or vandalism.
Materials:
Steel: Traditional choice; heavy-duty but prone to rust unless powder-coated or painted.
Aluminum: Lightweight (often ~6 lbs vs. ~50 lbs for steel) and naturally corrosion-resistant, making them easier for drillers to transport.
Visibility: Often painted in high-visibility colours like safety yellow, blue, or red to ensure they are easily located in tall grass or forested areas.
Installation: Typically installed roughly 0.75 metres below ground and set in a concrete or mounded soil base to divert surface water away from the well.
Common Dimensions: Frequently found in 4″ x 4″ square or round configurations, with standard lengths around 5 feet (1.5 metres) to allow for sufficient “stick-up” height.
